YAOI HAS ITS ROOTS IN FEMINISM. I studied this at a JP prestegious top Uni in Tokyo.
It started out bc women were tired of being the damsel in distress so they put guys into the role of the female lead. Men got so mad abt this they called them rotten girls, unfit for marriage
So the term Fujoshi was born as a slur but has since been reclaimed in online spaces and otaku spaces. Most modern Yaoi are even written with queer perspectives and experiences in mind. The older more "problematic" yaoi has its roots in history of samurai and wakushu where a lot of the harmful stereotypes of the "uwu submissive feminine uke" and the "tough straight tm bro seme" come from (look up and read books about the wakushu, very sad stories tho) I wrote a paper about this even.
