Ah, but not all hearts are the same, darlin’. I don’t think yours is made of sunshine and rainbows. Princess bullshit, isn’t that what you said at the fair? I know yours is the exact opposite. Yours is a fortress. One that needs to be battled for. Bled for. Once inside, it belongs to whoever was smug enough to believe he could get past the gates.

Bella Di Corte, Marauder

I’d kept away from anything that caused highs and lows for all of my adult life, preferring to sail smoothly down comfortable lane. With my past, you didn’t have to be a therapist to understand why I’d take that route.

"If you want to be happy—you have to take chances. You have to open yourself up to getting hurt.”

“I’m scared to make a choice.” My voice cracks as I round the car into my neighborhood.

“You know what’s scarier?” she asks. “Not making one at all.”

Wren fell into a period of self-reflection after that, a time where she realized it was more important to love herself than be loved by someone else. That’s not to say that she didn’t hope to love another person again, just that she understood it wasn’t the most important thing for survival.

Don’t shy away from the world. You will get hurt. You will hurt others, even if you don’t mean to. Pain is inevitable through life. But joy is too. So seize the day.

a connection between two people is no less valuable if cut short by circumstance

(...) whenever I thought of falling in love, I’d feel slightly ill and unsettled. Love is risk. For me, opening myself up to certain risks meant opening myself up to pain.

Kristen Callihan, Dear Enemy

When girls like us fall, there’s no one to catch us. Least of all that boy for whom we’ve taken the fall.

We’re the girls with secrets and witchy hearts. We’re the girls who listen to sad songs. Who slow dance to them with tears streaming down our faces, even as a smile lingers on our lips. Who cry in our pillows at night and who ride our sunshine-yellow bicycle along the empty, desolate, miserable places, where no one goes.
